PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
Friday, March 19xh. Mr. Simmonds moved, " That in the opinion of this Council an Income Tax is the most equitable means of raising a revenue for the purposes of any general systetn of Education.'' Seconded by Mr. Saunders.
Mr. Baigent moved, " To strike out the word 'an' in line 1, and insert the words ' a property and.*"
Seconded: by Mr. Parker. . Council divided—For Mr. Baigent's amendment—Ayes : Messrs. Domett, Wells, M'Rae, Kelling,' Parker, Baigent, Simmonds, Eban, and Saunders. Noes: Messrs. Adams, Vyvyan, Curtis, Monro, Elliott, Robinson, Sinclair, Mackay, Sharp, Mairsden, and Dodson. For the original motion of Mr. Simmonds--Ayes: Messrs. Saunders, Eban. Simmonds, Baigent, Parker, and Marsden. Noes: Messrs. Dodson, Sharp, Kelling, Mackay, M'Rae, Sinclair, Robinson, Elliott, Monro, Curtis, Vyvyan, Wells,-Do-mett, and Adams. Both? amendment and motion were therefore lost.
■ Mr. Sharp moved, "That when any new clauses to a bill have been printed and laid on the table one clear day, such clauses may be proposed in the order in which they are intended to be placed in the bill." Seconded by Mr. Mackay. Question put and agreed to; The Provincial Secretary postponed the consideration of the Estimates till Thursday next. Gouncil adjourned until Tuesday.
