MELBOURNE.
The Jge, of the 28th ultinio says :— The arrival of later English news by the SAviftsure has not contributed much to restore the tone of our markets, though there seems to be a general impression that the shipments to Australia in October and November would be very materially decreased in consequence of the state of the money market. The Continental and American panics would certainly affect the London money markets, and the increase in the value and scarcity of'money would tend to check the unlimited shipments which, under an easier "state of things, are encou-" raged. This, combined with the reiterated cautions conveyed by the homeward advices of the successive mails R>r several months past, will probably effect what our importers have so long desired—a decline in consignments. At the wool sales this week about 4000 bales have - been offered, but buyers showed littl? aiixiety to purchase. There was not sufficient demand to maintain'fully the recent rates, though the last reports of English wool sales show an ad T yance of about a Id; per lb. at Liverpool. Prices here range lower than at the last sales ; greasy Id. to ljd. per lb., and on fleece l|d. to 2d. per lb. 1 Little has been done in flour. - The highest price quotable for actual transactions is Jl6 10s. Oats are in good demand for consumption, but the large quantities in the market must be further worked off before prices rise. The price of Scotch is 4s. 9d. to ss. .
