A Precocious Elocdtionist.-~A little American girl, Miss Lavinia Thompson, has been giving for Home weeks past a series of dramatic readings, chiefly from Shakspeare and Sheridan, in drawing-rooms at the West End of London. The child is interesting from her intelligence and from her power of grasping characters utterly beyond the reach of her experience. Her action is extremely .graceful, and her elocution pure and sonorous; promising excellence of a high typo ehould the present blossom ripen, as it ought, into perfect fruit.— Athenceum. Chinese Place op Worship. —The appeal now being made by the Chinese missionary Lo Sour Yeni to his countrymen for money to erect a house for Christian worship for their use, appears to be highly successful. .Within the last fortnight the sum of 1501. has been gathered by the exertions of the missionary. It is to be hoped that some permanent good to the Chinese of the district will arise from this effort on their behalf. Having shown that they are willing to contribute, themselves, they may reasonably expect to be aided in bo worthy a cause by Christian Europeans.— Ballaarat Star.
