POLICE.
FrojA tlie intimations already given, in relation id' locks and bolts, cash-boxes, &c, our authorities will see the necessity there is to keep the existing corps "of Nelson Police on full and vigilant duty. The Executive' will, we believe, feel the immediate need of strengthening the night service of the constabulary, and of placing this city.and the'vicinity under careful protection. Large numbers of strangers are arriving, and more may be daily expected. It behoves our householders to be wary and prudent ; precautions cost little, and may be preventive of serious evils. Let the public look out. The Chinese are not the only worthies for whom we should be* prepared. It will be desirable, too, for the Administration to lose no time in fixing upon a proper locality for new-comers and their tents; a site' inhere foreigners will be comparatively safe, and where the mischivebus can do no great harm. Cannot a. few. lamps, and extra agents in the protective be provided ? The Botanical Gardens seem to offer a suitable opening, both on account of health and water, and we might add relation to the main body of the city, for the purpose contemplated. If we are without a provident foresight and prompt arrangement, corresponding with the demands of the present occasion, we may have to eat the wormwood of repentance when too'late for usefulness. ,
