CLOSE OF THE POLL.
The polling' for the country district took place on Thursday. The returns from the different polling places along the coast have been received, and the following will, we believe, be found to be the correct state of the poll at its close :—Brandon, 209; Wallace, 189; Johnston, 174; St. Hill, 161; M'Manaway, 151; Schultze, 134; Curl, 98; Reading, 92; Bould, 83; Hurst, 66; Mitchell, 57. We understand the state of the poll will be formally declared by the Returning Officer on Monday.
At the nomination for members at Wanganui on Tuesday last, Captain Campbell, Messrs. Watt, Fox, Handley, Kells, and Richards, were severally proposed as candidates. "All the candidates," says.the Wanganui Chronicle, "pledged themselves to support the Featherston policy and Government, except Mr. Kells, who only gave a qualified support." The show of hands was declared to be in favor of Captain Campbell, Messrs. Watt, Fox, and Kells ; Mr. Handley demanded a poll, and Mr. Richards retired. The polling took place on Thursday.
