Probincial News. ELECTION OF MEMBERS FOR THE CITY OF WELLINGTON.

On Wednesday last the Nomination of Candidates to represent the City of Wellington in the Pro? vincial Council took plac^ at the Resident Magistrate's Court House at 12 o'clock.

After the usual preliminaries had been gone through, by the Returning Officer reading the Writ authorising the Election, the following tweny-six candidates were duly proposed and seconded, viz.:—Messrs. Allen, Bowler, Barry, Clifford, Carpenter, Fitzgerald; Fox, Fawcett, Holdsworth, Hunter, Johnson, King, Lyon, May, McLaggan, Plimmer, Spinks, Stokes, Smith, Taylor, Toomah, Varnham, Wallace, Warburto'o, Wakefield, and Woodward. After the nomination, the candidates severally briefly addressed the electors, and the Returning Officer announced that the polling would commence next day (Thursday) at 9 o'clock and close at 4. ' • ' '

On Thursday at the close of the poll the Returning Officer declared the following gentlemen to be duly elected, viz.:—Messrs. Hunter, Bowler, Varnham, Wakefield,. Allen, Toomath, Kingy Carpenter, Stokes, Barry, McLaggan, and Warburton.

The following is a list of the votings for the several candidates, viz.:—Hunter, 352 ; Bowler, 332; Varnham, 323; Wakefield, 322; Allen,, 309; Toomath, 306; King, 299; Carpenter, 298 ; Stokes, 291; Barry, 286; McLaggan, 271; Warburton, 270; Clifford, 223; Spinks, 203; Taylor, 197; Fox, 180; Wallace, 167; Woodward, 159 ;. May, 152; Smith, 149; Plimmer, 146; Lyon, 128; Fawcett, 125; Holdsworth, 116; Johnson,, 55; Fitzgerald, 10. • In the evening the elected candidates met at Barry's Theatre, and thanked the electors for having returned them. Mr. Spinks also came before the meeting, and thanked those who had supported him.— Wellington Independent, Nwember7.
