Hints on the Sale of Poison.—A correspondent sends us the following:—" Vendors of poison should be compelled to enter the particulars of sale in a book kept for that purpose, containing in form the date of sale, name of the purchaser (who should be of full age), his place of abode, the quantity sold, and the purpose for which it was required. A penalty should be imposed on the seller for neglecting to fulfil the above or similar conditions. —I am, yours obediently, Blue Shiut,'' Gold Purchases.—Within the last fortnight, Mr. Coates, watchmaker, has purchased about ,£2200 worth, of gold-dust. The principal quantity has been brought from the Slate River, and has rather a dark appearance, being encrusted with what looks like iron rust. The gold obtained from the Aorere is much brighter than that which is got from the Slate River. Foul Air in Wells.—-Put some unslaked lime into a large bucket (not so much as to cause it to fall over when it becomes slaked), and before lowering the bucket into the well pour a sufficient quantity of water on the lime to slake it. Immediately that the water has been put to the lime let the bucket and its contents be lowered to the water in the well, but not so as to go into it. In a few minutes the well will be cleared of foul air.

Dairy Secret. —-Have ready two pans in boiling water, and on the new milk coming to the dairy take the hot pans out of the water, put the milk in one of them and cover it with the other. This will occasion great augmentation in the thickness and quality of the cream.—Communicated.

Discharge op Water through Pipks.—The following is a simple practical rule for finding the quantities of water discharged by pipes of different , diameters, and under different heads of water, deduced from the rules of M. Bossutt and others:— J " Multiply the area of the pipe by the square root'of the head of water, and that product by 1117*25 for the theoretical quantity, four-fifths of which will be equal to the actual quantity dis- ; charged in imperial gallons per hour.— Builder. j£ Speculators GenisralijY Dim Pooit.—lf they make one thousand pounds to-day on a coal mine, they must try and make two thousand to-morrow by dabbling, in the Do-'em-brown Railway. Like the boy who undertook to steal preserves through a knot-hole, they get their iMinds so full of sweets that they cannot pull them back again. Spbkchmakino.—lnterminable talk seems indigenous to Parliaments all over the world. The Halifax S'un, speaking of the parliamentary session in Nova Scotia says :—"• Our complaint is, that, owing to interminable speechifying, each onechief speakers and small-talk men alike—insisting upon having Ms 'spoke'—blattering- away upon every question of great or little importance, or no importance at all, the main business for which Parliament is convened is permitted to lie over till the last dajrs of ' the session, then to be literally ' despatched in haste.'" They never say it snows in California, but that * winter is throwing its maiitle over the ground.' So with'an- earthquake—they call it .'the vibration of Heaven's footstool.' Quite poetic.
