Gentlemen. —The result of the contest for the Supcrintendency having been this day officially declared, by which it is made known that a majority of 230 votes have been recorded in my favour, the pleasing duty devolves upon me of tendering you my sincere thanks for this renewed: expression of your confidence and esteem. The fact that the majority has been increased from 16, the number at the last election, to 230 on the present occasion, is to me a gratifying evidence that the course I have pursued during the ten months I have held the important office to which you have now re-elected me, meets with your approval; and to know that this result has been again obtained without resorting to those debasing influences which so frequently characterise contested elections, will be a pleasing recollection to. all those who desire the moral advancement of the people, and a standing proof, to every constituency, that a comparatively small portion of the electors arc so degraded as to be influenced by the humiliating attempts too commonly made to divert them from the free and independent exercise of their political privelegrs. Your honest votes, uninJluenced by a single solicitation on my part, have placed me in a position confidently to persevere in the earnest endeavours I shall make to promote such measures as may appear to me best calculated to advance the present and. future prosperity of the province, without special regard to any class, sect, or party. I have the honour to be, Gentlemen, Your obliged and obedient sen-ant, J. P. Robinson. Nelson, October 20,1857.
