MODERN EDUCATION

THE POST-PRIMARY SYSTEM TRADE TRAINING FACILITIES(Contributed by Mr H. Rochfort, Principal, Te Awamutu College) Do post-primary schools give trade training to their day pupils ? The answer is no. Most technical and multi-course schools have a trades course. This does not give trade training but is designed as the most suitable preparation for trade training after the boy has left school. This course, like all others, insists firs 9 upon a general education in English, geography, history, science, mathematics, etc., and provides in the remaining optional period for training in the use of tools and other allied activities. Just as a school professional course does not, for example, commence a medical course, but gives a boy a suitable grounding before he commences his professional training, so the trades course does not commence trade training but lays a foundation for it. 'Night classes for apprentices are in a different category. They definitely aid at giving trade training.

Should trade training fie given to day pupils ? In my opinion, definitely not. The post-primary school should give a good general education to all pupils. Trade training proper should commence when a boy enters his trade.
