Long Periods In Office

Mr. W. Jones, who has been returned unopposed as Mayor of Whangarei, has served in that office for 21 years. The same two men, Messrs. H. C. Rushworth and K. G. M. Kelly, have signed all Mr. Jones’s nomination papers for 21 years. They also were his nominators when he stood for Parliament on three occasions. A more remarkable record, however, is held by Mr. C. D. McConnell, the Mayor of Mataura, who has been nominated for re-election after havingserved as Mayor .since 1921, except for the years 1935-1938, a period of 26i years.
