Final Meeting of Borough Council To-night’s meeting of the Te Awamutu Borough Council will be the last of that local body as at present constituted, as four of the members are not seeking re-election.

State Highways Classification The National Park—Wanganui State Highway from Horopito—Bulls, the Taihape State Highway to Raetihi and from Kakatahi to Wanganui, has been classified as being in Class Two. The National Park—Wanganui State Highway from Raetihi to Kakatahi has been classified in Class Three.

Use of Kihikihi Domain

Mr J. G. Wynyard and others approached a recent meeting of Kihikihi Town Board for sanction to use the domain for a projected pony club which they were desirous of forming in Kihikihi. The Board decided that the club’s requirements at the domain would be decided after such club had been formed. Woman Juror Mrs Constance Fuller, who survived the scrutiny of the prosecutor and two defence counsel, became the second woman in the history of the Supreme Court, Wellington, to serve on a jury. The Court Registrar, W. Parker, said that he hau officiated at over 50 sessions and it was the first time he had seen a woman accepted for a jury.

Kihikihi Community Centre A recent public meeting at Kihikihi gave the Kihikihi Domain Board authority to expend moneys on working plans for that town. The Board is acting as the local authority for the Community Centre War Memorial Committee which is shortly to make an appeal to raise funds and has to be represented by an authority to obtain subsidies.

Court List The list of sases to he heard in the Te Awamutu Magistrate’s Court to-morrow includes one children’s Court charge incolving theft, two cases of escaping from the lawful custody of the Waikeria Borstal Institution, four charges of liquor at dances, and six for miscellaneous breaches of the Traffic Regulations. There is also one civil claim for possession of land.

Kihikihi Town Lights Five fluorescent lights for the main street of Kihikihi are to be installed in the near future by Te Awamutu Electric Power Board, following an application by the Town Board to have the lamps installed. Each lamp will be of 200-watt capacity, and will be erected between Regan’s corner and the Alpha Hotel. No installation cost will be sustained by the Town Board. Three ordinary lights are to be installed in Bryce Street.

Confusion Over Suffusion While describing tests for intoxication made on accused a doctor in the Supreme Court, Hamilton, said that there was no suffusion of the conjunctivae. Eager to remove any doubt from the finds of the jury the Crown Prosecutor quickly began to explain that the term was concerned with the converging of the eyes on an object. There was laughter in the court when Mr. Justice Stanton corrected him and further explained that the term simply meant that the eyes were not bloodshot.

Te Awamutu Man Charged Failure to notify a change of address under the National Service Emergency Regulations at Auckland on January 20, 1945, was alleged when Trevor Walter McLisky, aged 25, farm labourer, of no fixed abode, formerly of Te Awamutu, was charged before Messrs. W. A. Forsyth and P. Hunter, J.P.’.s, in the Hamilton Police Court on Saturday. Senior-Sergeant R. J. Sutherland said accused was arrested on a warrant issued in Auckland. McLisky was remanded to appear in Auckland tomorrow.

New’ Research On Wool Grease Mr. B. R. Thomas, a 24-year-old New Zealand chemical research worker, and Dr. J. S. Fawcett, who has just completed three years’ research work at Imperial College, London, have been appointed Research Fellows at Birkbeck College Research Laboratory, University of London. Both new Fellows will .specialise in research on the important constituents found in wool grease. Both fellowships have been made available by the International Wool Secretariat as part of a large project on the constituents of wool grease. Much of the work is already being carried out at Leeds University.

Motor-cyclist’s Escape Mr. Karel Koekelkoran, a Dutch immigrant who arrived in New Zealand from the Netherlands East Indies almost a year ago, had an extremely narrow escape from serious, if not fatal injuries, when a car collided with his motor-cycle last Thursday in Hamilton. Mr. Koekelkoran was returning from Hamilton to Te Awamutu and while travelling near the Hamilton Technical College, a car came off an intersection and collided with the middle of his machine, bending it into a horseshoe shape. Mr. Koekelkoran was adimtted to the Waikato Hospital suffering from shock, but was discharged on Friday afternoon.

Official Opening of Water Supply Next Saturday will be a big day for Kihikihi Town Board, when its water esupply scheme, which is derived from a bore sunk on the site of the old constabulary barracks on the hill obove the police station., will be officially opened. For many months past the Board has been busy laying water and fire mains throughout the town. The Mr IM. J. Broadfoot, M.P. for Waitomo, and the member for Waikato, Mr G. F. Sim, have both been invited to be present for the occasion. Mr Sim has apologised that he will be unable to be present owing to three prior engagements. but Mr Broadfoot has stated that he will try to be present, depending on whether he can leave his duties in Wellington or not. Te Awamutu Fire Brigade is to take out its booster pump and give a display, and Kihikihi Town Band, which is practising assiduously, will also be present.
