FANCY DRESS SOCIAL
CHILDREN ENTERTAINED ASCOT MARCHING TEAM FUNCTION Last Saturday night saw the assembly hall of Te Awamutu Coliege the scene of a very colourful and happy function, when the members of the Ascot Girls’ Marching Team held a children’s fancy dress social. The evening opened with the Grand March, and then the difficult task of judging the costumes fell to Mesdames Fletcher, Trigger, and Clark. This proved to be a very onerous job, due to the large number of children present and the gteat variety of beautiful costumes, which were spectacular and colourful in the extreme. The prize-winners in the various sections were:—
Best girl, under five years: Denise Ryan, Baby Doll. Best boy under five years: Murray Orr, Fishermap. Special prize, under five years: Roger Hunt, The Devil. Best girl, five to ten years: Julie Hill, Knitting. Best boy, five to ten years; David Grey, Superman. 'Special prizes, five to ten years: Girls: Rosalie Orr, Queen Wasp. Boys: Garry Curtis, Superman. Best girl, ten years and over: Maureen Faithfull, Piano. Best boy, ten years and over; Bruce Page, Cave Man. Special prizes _in this class: Girls: Barbara Watson, Bride. Boys; Keith Duggan, Bridegroom. The children were kept entertained during the evening with dancing and games under the leadership of Mr E. Costello (Ascot team’s coach), who proved to be a very efficient master of ceremonies and entertainer. The music for the evening was provided by Mrs Atkinson, who did much to make the games and dancing a success.
Another item which was very much appreciated by children and adults was a song, “ Galway Bay,” by Benny Craig.
At the closing of the function the chi’dren were taken into supper, where the tables were laden with cream cakes, sweets, gingerbread toys, and all the other delicacies that chi’dren love. Supper brought a very happy evening to a close.
