WAR MEMORIAL
COMMUNITY CENTRE AT HONIKIWI WHAT PRACTICAL INTEREST CAN DO What can be done when a really practical interest is taken in a War Memorial project was shown at Monday’s meeting of the Otorohanga County Council, when plans were before councillors for the proposed War Memorial at Honikiwi. The plans were of a district hall with all the necessary conveniences with provision for a library, one acre of land was involved and te.nnis courts are to be laid down. The hall would also be used as ?.n undenominational church, thus embodying a community centre to meet the needs of the district. The settlers concerned cut trees out of the bush in the locality, had them transported to a sawmill where they were cut into timber and re-transport-ed back to the site of the hall. The estimated cost was £2500 or £2700, and the settlers’ contribution in the main was the cost of the timber cutting and transport. The council decided to forward the plans to Wellington with a recommendation that they are approved, and councillors congratulated the. Honikiwi residents on their initiative.
