WOOL TEXTILES
NEW PRODUCTION RECORDS New post-war production records are being set up by the United Kingdom wool textile industry. Some idea of the immensity of output of British wool cloth may be gained from the fact that a month’s deliveries, at the rate recorded for last September would be sufficient to provide a strip of cloth one yard wide and extending more than 20,000 miles —four-fifths of the distance round the globe, says the New Zealand Wool Board. September deliveries of wool cloth (excluding blankets) were 24,840,000 linear yards, or one per cent, higher than the previous highest deliveries last March. Blanket deliveries were higher than in spring and summer but below the monthly average for the first quarter of this year. Worsted yarn deliveries totalled 18,730,000 lb- with a wool content of 17,410,000 lb., or only two per cent, below the previous peak in March last. The wool content of hand-knitting yarns was the highest yet recorded. Average weekly output of wool tops for the whole four weeks ended September 24th was 5,920,000 lb., which was three per cent, more than the previous highest post-war weekly average, reached in May, 1948.
