WORLD BANANA TRADE

RETURNING TO PRE-WAR VOLUME World banana trade is slowly returning to its pre-war volume. The U.S, Department of Agriculture estimates world exports of bananas during 1948 at 90,000,000 bunches of 50 pounds each. This was 7 per cent, more than 1947 exports and three times , greater than exports in 1943, when shipping was disrupted and exports dropped to 29,800,000 bunches. Last year’s exports, however, were still 17 per cent, below the 1934-38 average.

The Western Hemisphere supplied 86 per cent, of the banana tonnage in international trade in 1948, as compared with 83 per cent, during the pre-war period. The remainder of the 1948 exports were supplied by Africa, which furnished 12 per cent, and Asia and Oceania, 1 per cent. each. The United States and Canada were the principal banana-importing countries in 1948, buying 67 per cent, of those sold in the world market. Europe imported 23 per cent, and South America, 9 per cent. The remaining 1 per cent, went to Asia, Africa, and Oceania.
