HAIRINI NEWS

TENNIS CLUB’S OPENING DAY FLOWER SHOW ALSO HELD After a very wet morning last Saturday, the weather cleared miraculously, allowing the Hairini Tennis Club to proceed with its opening dayThe club has of recent years endeavoured to make its opening a district picnic day, and with this aim has tried to provide entertainment not only for tennis players, but for all the residents of the district, both young and old. Unfortunately, the doubtful weathej last Saturday affected the crowd considerably, but some seventy residents and visitors gathered And enjoyed a good days outing. A f eature of the day was the flower show staged in the hall, this proving successful, although here again the weather affected the number of entries. Nevertheless, some very good exhibits were on display. Mr J. A. Marx and Mrs K. Lewis acted very competently as judges. The winners of the points prizes in the adult’s section were Mrs Thomas 1; Mrs D. Ellis 2. The winners in the children’s section were as follows: Decorated Saucer (9yrs and under): Rosalene Ellis 1, Marlene Bowden 2. Decorated Saucer (10 years and over): Raiewyn Payne 1, Lyn Payne 2. Novelty Buttonhole: Barry Ellis 1. Floating Bowl: Shirley Ellis 1, Rosalena Ellis 2. The children too were well catered for during the day, and eagerly participated in the races organised for them. There was no need to announce the arrival of the ice-cream either, nor did they need a second invitation to join in the lolly scramble! On the tennis courts, play was in full swing and the captain kept the courts well occupied with organised play. At 2.30 p.m. all activities were brought to a standstill while the official opening took place. The president (Mr D. Ellis), in his speech welcomed the residents and visitors and extended ito the surrounding clubs his best wishes for a successful season. Mjrs Ellis was then called upon to set the 1949-50 season in motion by hitting the first ball over the net. This was carried out amidst applause. The president then thanked the judges and various donors of prizes for the flower show and called on Mrs S. E. Bryant, wife of the club’s patron to present these to the winners listed above. Following this Mr Marx took the opportunity to congratulate the club on the success of tflie flower show and stated that he wished to donate a prize l for the best arranged exhibit. This was also awarded to Mrs Thomas who came forward to receive a handsome pot plant. A very delectable lunch and afternoon tea was provided by the ladies of the club, after which tennis enthusiasts returned to the courts and resumed their play. A fitting climax to the day was the very enjoyable dance held in the hall at night. Brigh* streamers and floral decorations presented a gay sight for the large throng of dancers who took the floor. Roycroft’s orchestra provided their ever-popular bright music and Mr Leo Long as M.C. kept the programme moving with a swing.' A novelty dance was won by Mrs L. Long and Mr Knight. A feature of the evening was the delicious and bountiful supper provided, ample •evidence of the ability of Hairini cooks. Dancing continued until midnight thus bringing a highly successful day to a close.
