KAWHIA BOWLING CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING HELD YEAR OF GREAT PROGRESS There was a representative attendance at the annual meeting of the Kawhia Bowling Club; when the President, Mr Les. W. Spence, occupied the chair. The balance-sheet, showing the Club to be in a satisfactory financial state, was read and adopted. Review or the Year The President submitted the annual report as follows:—< “ We have had several chariges in the personnel of the committee, due to members leaving the district, but the keenness of members and the interest displayed have resulted in another successful season for the Club. “ The membership stands at 25, and I am hopeful that with a better green and playing facilities the membership will greatly increase this coming season. “ Your committee wisely decided to close the season very early, in preparation for re-levelling and re-sow-ing the green so as to receive the benefit of the autumn growth. This action is now reflected in the excellent state of the green, which has never looked better. “ W e are indebted to the untiring efforts, throughout the winter, of Messrs R. Nesbit, W. Davies, and J. O’Connor for the major part of this work. The grounds generally havebeen cleaned up. fences repaired, gardens dug, and border plants and hedges planted. Undoubtedly the Club’s grounds will be the beautyspot of Kawhia this year. “ A start has been made with the extension to the pavilion and I trust it will be finished in time for the opening of our season. “ A number of our members visited Te Awamutu, Raglan, Pirongia, and Otorohanga during the term and acquitted themselves really well. ‘ W>e have enjoyed the company of visiting bowlers from the following Clubs: Pirongia, Raglan, Te Kuiti, Te Awamutu Arapuni, Cambridge, Hamilton, Taumarunui and Putaruru. The goodfellowship that exists among the bowling fraternity generally was evident on each occasion.
“ The long-awaited Club badges have now arrived. “ The Club competitions were keenly contested, and resulted as follows: Pairs Cup, Messrs L. W. Spence and J. Manawaiti; Singles Gold Buttons Mr J. O’Connor; Pairs Silver Buttons, Messrs R. Nesbit and H. Daysh. “ The finances of the Club show an increased credit balance, but as many improvements are desirable this coming term every endeavour should be made to supplement the funds. Various donations were received, and our thanks are due to the many donors and other well-wishers of the Club who so materially assisted us during the past season. In conclusion to my committee, which has made my term as President an enjoyable one, to M*r R. MlcFie, and to the ladies who have always given us valuable assistance particularly on tournament days, I offer our heartfelt thanks and extend to the in-coming President and committee my most sincere wish for a harmonious and successful term of office during the 1949-50 season.” Election of Officers The following officers were elected for the ensuing term:— President: Mr Les. W. Spence (re-
elected). Vice-Presidents: Messrs Rex Nesbit and W. W„ Davies (re-elected). Secretary and Treasurer: Mfr L. L. Allen (re-elected). Social Secretary: Mr Rex Nesbit. Green Superintendent; M|r W. W. Davies. . Delegate to Centre: M|r Les. W. Spence. Committee: Messrs Martin Clark, A. J. Goodwin. T. O’Connor, S. H. Gould, and R. McKie. Complimentary Remarks When it came to electing’ the President, M> Goodwin proposed and Mr Davies seconded the re-election of Mr Spence. Mr Spence proposed and Mir O’Connor seconded the appointment of Mr Rex Nesbit. Mr Nesbit declined nomination, saying that in Mir Spence the Club had the right man in the right place. He had pulled the Club through, and it would need him during the coming year, especially as he was in touch with clubs outside. Mr Spence reiterated his thanks to Messrs Nesbit, Davies. Jack O’Connor, Steve Sifleet, and others for their great work during the year. They had stuck right through the piece, and got on with the job, so that they now had a green of which all could be proud. He would like to see them have the honour and glory of the results of their work. In the end Mr Spence accepted renomination and was re-elected unopposed. Mr Spence, in reply, thanked members for the confidence shown. With their support, and that of the townspeople, the year should be a red-letter one for Kawhia, as the Club now possessed “ a beauty spot.” The green was in such a splendid condition that it would be well worth the time of any bowler in any part of the coun-
try coming to play on. Therefore he hoped to see more visitors during the coming season. Mr Davies paid a handsome tribute to the work performed by Mr Rex Nesbit. Mr Nesbit returned the compliment, remarking on the great amount of work undertaken by Mir Davies. The President paid a tribute to the able manner in which Mr Allen had carried out his secretarial duties during the year. General Business The subscription was fixed at the same rates as last year namely, £2 2s for full membership and £1 Is for part-time members, the latter to apply only to visitors from outside the district. The opening day was fixed for Saturday, 15th October, but is' subject to the green superintendent’s final approval. A contract was let providing for the green being mowed and rolled twice weekly during -the months of November, December, January, and February. The question of ladies playing bowls' was discussed, and the idea found a favourable reception. Eventually it was decided to intimate to the interested ladies that if they were desirous of forming a bowling club the Club would be prepared to negotiate with them regarding the use of its facilities. Six new members were elected. The Bowling Club held an enjoyable dance in Wiard’s Hall on Tuesday evening, when the music was supplied by Mr Les. W. Spence, with Mr Bert Vaughan as master of ceremonies. A dancing competition was won by Miss Josephine Kirk and Mir G. Hunter. The ladies, as of yore, provided a dainty supper.
