SPELLING OF MAORI NAME

Sir, —I am not able to contradict Mr G. Searancke’s claim that I mis-spelt Taringamotu in my recent letter pointing out Mr Kemp’s mis-spelling of the same name, owing to the fact that my copy of the Courier of 13th June was destroyed before I saw Mr Searancke’s letter. I am very well aware that no Maori word or syllable ends with a consonant, and am of the opinion that probably the omission was merely an error in the printing. I am pleased to see that Mr Kemp now agrees that Taringamutu is not the correct spelling. Could Mr Searancke or anyone else inform me if Taringamutu and Taringamotu have the same meaning?—l am, etc., BERNARD M. WILLIAMS.
