WORLD GRAIN SUPPLIES
MORE IN COMING YEAR .GLUT IN SOME AREAS Larger grain supplies in most parts of the w.orld in 1948-49 have helped to relieve the food crisis of recent years and have encouraged rehabilitation of livestock where animal numbers have been reduced because of lack of feed, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (F.A.0.) More and more countries have relaxed consumption controls and concern in some areas is shifting from shortages to surpluses. Production in 1948 of the five principal grain crops (wheat, rye, corn, oats, barley) totalled 472 million metric tons. This figure exceeded that of 1947 (nearly 410 million ' ons) by about 15 per cent. The 1934-38 average was a little over 442 ?nillion metric tons. Four exporting countries have 90 per cent, of the estimated grain availability in 1948-49; the United States 47 per cent-; Canada 20 per cent.; Argentina 13 per cant.; Australia 10 per cent.
