LIQUOR QUESTION
IN THE KING COUNTRY PROTESTS BY THE MAORIS A strong call upon the Government to adhere to the sacred pact concerning the entry, of liquor into the King Country, made between Sir Robert Stout and the chiefs Rewi Maniapoto and Wahanui, representatives of the tribes of the Rohe Potae, was made at a representative, meeting of Rohe Potae (King Country) tribes at Te Kuiti. The resolution was carried unanimously by a gathering of about fifty Maoris, Mr Moerua presiding at the meeting.
The view was strongly expressed that any legislation now being prepared by the Government should
transgress neither the spirit nor the letter of the Pact which Sir Robert Stout made in the 80’s with the representatives of the, Maori people about the time that the King’s auketai was lifted and permission given for the railway to traverse the King Country. The Rohe Potae should, it was contended, be protected for all time against the importation of liquor.
