McKenzie, at Monday’s meeting when reference was made to a recent accident in which an Otorohanga County (truck was involved, and a boy later died in hospital. Off-Course Betting The first shot in the campaign for the off-course betting issue in the coming poll was fired by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club in its race card for last Saturday. In the middle of the card is a request for patrons to vote “Yes” when the poll is held in February. The notice says that all profits will go back into the sport. It is claimed that there will be increased amenities for the public on racecourses and increased stakes for owners.
Interest in Melbourne Cup As usual great interest was taken in the running of the Melbourne Cup yesterday afternoon. It is safe to assume that few radios were not in use and the broadcast description of the running of the race was followed with the liveliest interest, especially by those who had a “mild” interest in the result per medium of “sweeps.” There are still many, no doubt, who will be hopeful enough to expect either a cable or a registered letter this week as a result of investments in an overseas consultation.
