'ln a plea for the ujo of simpler language in official letters a member of the Australian House of Representatives said recently that by doing this 92 typists could be released for other work in the offices of Federal public servants. By using simpler language public servants could save annually 240,000 quarto sheets of typing paper and 200,000 man-hours spent in puzzling out the meaning of obscure phrases. A book entitled “Plain Words” had recently been published by the British Government as a guide to the use of English in official correspondence.
