Footpath Excavations Adjustments to underground telephone cables were responsible for excavation work on a portion of the footpath in Alexandra Street this week. Brakes to be Checked The Transport Department is to hold a drive throughout the Dominion beginning on November Sth, to check motor-vehicles for faulty brakes. The Minister of Transport, Mr Hackett, said that with the approach of the Christmas holidays, when traffic on the roads xvould be very heavy, the department wanted to ensure that every vehicle was mechanically sound. Christmas and New Year Holidays When Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Saturday they are to be transferred to the following Monday for the purposes of all awards. This provision is contained in the Public Holidays Amendment Bill, which was introduced and read a first time in the House of Representatives yesterday. In these circumstances the Boxing Day holiday and that on January 2nd would be observed on the following Tuesday. The bill also provides that Anniversary Day award holidays which fall on a Saturday or Sunday shall be transferred to the following Monday. The transfer of the Anzac Day holiday is prohibited except where a worker is required to work on Anzac Day’at ordinary rates of wages. Agricultural Education A party of 18 senior agricultural pupils of the Te Awamutu College visited Waiau Pa district this week where an agricultural course is beingundertaken by boys from the Whangarei Boy’s High School in charge of their master Mr Heward. The local boys were accompanied by Messrs A. E. Bryant, Knox Clarke, J. Pargetter (college) and McGhie. The party spent not only an instructive but a thoroughly enjoyable day and the lads who left home at 7 a.m. returned tired but happy at about the same hour in the evening. Federated Farmers (Auckland Province) made a substantial grant towards the expenses of the camp as the Whangarei boys have spent a week in the Waiau Pa district. Increased Cost of Dental Treatment A great increase in dental treatment at the Waikato Hospital according to a scale of charges for dental treatment for indigent patients. Extractions under local anaesthetic has risen from 5s to 7s 6d for each tooth, with an increase of 2s 6d per tooth until the maximum of £1 Is is reached. The prior figure for the former being 17s Gd. Extractions under gas has increased from 7s 6d to 10s, while a total clearance of both jaws remains the same at £2 2s. The greatest increase is indicated in the cost of full lower and upper dentures which used to cost £8 8s and now costs £l7 17s. An upper or lower denture used to cost £4 4s and now the charge is £9 9s. When the dentist has to visit the hospital for denture patients the extra cost of denture is £1 Is, a fee of 5s is to be allowed for travelling.
