Adoption of Children

The number of adoptions completed in New Zealand in 1947 was 1285, and, although this was 98 less than for 194 G, it should not be concluded that there was a decrease in the general demand for child adoptions, states the annual report of the Child Welfare Branch of the Education Department. There were 1383 adoptions in 1946, 1151 in 1945, 1065 in 1944, 854 in 1943, 685 in 1942, and 605 in 1941. Most applications for adoption were received from couples who had no children of their own, parents who wished to have a companion for their only child, and mothers of illegitimate children who wished to adopt their own children on 1 subsequent marriage. Most children were adopted up to the age of five years. Applications for infant girls usually predominated, but the orders made reflected the numbers and sex of the children available. Last year 631 boys and 654 girls were adopted. Of the total, 991 were illegitimate.
