DAIRY BOARD

CHANGE IN CONSTITUTION PROVISIONS OF AMENDMENT BILL The reconstitution of the New Zealand Dairy Board and an increase from three to five in the number of wards electing members to the hoard is provided for in the Dairy Produce Amendment Bill which was introduced and read a first time in the House of Representatives. The board at present comprises four representatives of the industry and ope Government representative, but under the amended constitution proposed in the Bill there will be in future a board of eight members—seven representatives of the industry and one of the Government.

Five of the producers’ representatives on the reconstituted board will be elected by the wards, one from each ward, and the other two producers’ representatives will be appointed by the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company Limited. A schedule to the bill defines the five wards as the Northern Ward, South Auckland Ward, Taranaki Ward, Wellington. Ward and Southern Ward. The boundaries of the wards are also defined.

Mr Cullen, Minister of Marketing, said that the provisions in the bill had been agreed to by the National Dairy Conference. The system of election by the wards was unchanged. Under another clause in the Bill the Minister of Agriculture has jurisdiction over the Dairy Board and not the Minister of Marketing.
