IDLE MAORI LANDS
QUESTION IN THE HOUSE FACILITATING DEVELOPMENT Speaking in. the House of Representatives, Mr W>. J. Broadfoot, M.P., said that if Maori owners did not desire to sell land to the Crown it could at least be vested in the Crown, which could then embark on a long-term policy. Mr Fraser: Something of that nature will have to be done, and in such matters I shall be pleased to have the co-operation of the hon. gentleman. 1 Mr Broadfoot said there were subsidies provided for Maori land development schemes and he would be glad to know whether the blocks included the Mahoenui or the Waimiha blocks. He said he remembered fully the work that Sir Apirana Ngata was doing. There were 76 schemes, and Sir Apirana kept his finger on the pulse of every one of them, and by doing that had saved scores of thousands of pounds. Mr Broadfoot said the development work Sir Apirana Ngata supervised was of immense importance, and was of great magnitude.
