AREA OF BRIDGES

ANOTHER AT MANGAKINO After a survey showed that it was impracticable to bring an access road in on the eastern side of the Waikato River at Mangakino Hydro-electric Works, it was decided to use the present road to the dam and cross the river somewhere below the powerhouse site. For this reason another bridge has to be built over the Waikato at Mangakino. At! present there is a Baillie bridge there, and the new structure will be a few chains below this, to gain access to the workshop and unloading bay at the power-house, which the contour of the country demands should be on the east bank of the river.

Construction, which it is hoped to commence early in the new year, will be done by means of a cableway, and the first task will be the erection of steel falsework on which to concrete the arches. This steel falsework has a long and varied career. Fabricated in 1937, it was first used in the concreting of Ohakea hangars and similar units at Whenuapai. Since then it has been used extensively as falsework for bridge construction.
