Many Varieties of Carnations

There were 3000 different varieties of carnations. The flower was known to exist as far back as 1463, as there was a picture extant of King Edward IV with a red carnation in his buttonhole, said Dr T. Fletcher Telford when he gave a 'talk on carnations and lilies to members of the Riccarton Garden Club.
