ADVANCE PAYMENT

BUTTERFAT PRODUCTION INCREASE OF HALFPENNY MADE Dairymen in the Waikato and adjacent districts are to receive an increased advance payment, based on supply from September 1, of approximately a halfpenny per lb. butterfat compared with the advance payments for supply prior to September 1. The payment is greater because'of the recently-announced increase of 0.844 d per lb granted to the whole dairy industry. The new advance payment will be 2s 2d per lb for first grade butterfat supplied for cheese making and 2s Old lb for finest grade for butter-making. This decision was reached at a meeting in Hamilton on Friday of the South Auckland Dairy Association. Mr W. N. Perry, who presided, said the object of the meeting was to determine the advance payments to be made by member dairy companies for the current season in view of the increase in the guaranteed price. The Morrinsville and Hinuera companies, which were not represented to-day, had advised that the price should not be increased, but he did not agree with that point of view. Mr J. M. Hill (Te Poi) moved that the association recommended to affiliated companies that the maximum advance payments, for the supply commencing on September 1 should be increased by halfpenny per lb butter fat to 2s 2d for first grade butterfat supplied for cheese-making and to 2s Oid for finest butterfat supplied for butter-making. Mr W. Harbutt (Cambridge) said that many farmers were not as well off as was generally believed, and in his opinion it would be better if the deferred payment at the end of the reason should be substantially increased. Mr Perry agreed that many farmers were not doing too well, and he submitted an instance which demonstrated this statement. Mr A. Hayward (New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company, Ltd.), said his company’s experience was that those who needed help most were returned servicemen who were being assisted by the Rehabilitation Department. Mr Harbutt moved that the advance payments should remain as they were last season. The amendment was lost and the motion was carried.
