GREAT DAMAGE DONE

CLOUDBURST AT HONIKIWI NUMEROUS SLIPS AND WASHOUTS A cloudburst which occurred at Honikiwi shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday evening caused a. considerable amount of damage in the district. As a result of the downpour, which was preceded by a heavy clap of thunde.r, there have been numerous slips and washouts on the main Honikiwi Road, extending as far as the Turoto junction, and a large quantity of metal has been washed off the road. Four three foot culvert pipes on Mr Oliver’s farm were washed down the gully and an earth dam on Mr H. C. Grierson’s property was washed away. A bridge on Mr W. H. McKenzie’s property was washed away and willow trees on the Turitea river were shifted bodily. An unconfirmed report states that several .sheep were drowned on Mr Merrin’s farm.
