ROYAL VISIT
ITINERARY CRITICISED NEGLECT OF RURAL CENTRES Disappointment has been expressed that the itinerary of the Royal Tour apparently will not allow of the Royal party devoting very much time to inspecting farming activities in the Waikato. Recently the committee of the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association made a protest on behalf of the farming community regarding the time of the Royal visit to Hamilton, which it was considered would prevent farmers and their families from seeing the Royal visitors.
One leading member of the farming community complained that it seemed that too much time was to be devoted to the major cities and too little to the rural areas from where the bulk of the Dominion’s wealth is derived. New Zealand had played a big part in helping to keep the people of Britain adequately fed and it was likely the King would be keenly interested in dairy, meat and wool production. The (opinion also expressed that a visit to the Ruakura Animal Research Station by the Royal Party would be weli worthwhile, as Ruakura could be classed as one of the leading farming research institutions in the Empire. Such a visit would serve to indicate how New Zealand was striving to improve her farm livestock and thus increase the export of vitally needed foodstuffs to Britain.
