TIMBER STANDARDS

DEFINED BY NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE

The latest standard specifications issued by the New Zealand Standards Institute deals with profiles of weatherboards, floorings and matchlining and profiles of mouldings and joiners. It is claimed 'that general adoption ■of flhe standard. profiles will lead to substantial economies in production costs, and correspondingly increased production, by permitting longer, and therefore more economic production runs, due to a reduction in the number of different settings of cutter heads required to produce an unduly diversified range of profiles. Producers will thus be able to cut their logs to the best advantage, and will be in a position to plan continuity of production, in the knowledge that accumulated, stocks will meet the needs of users. Distributors will benefit, since they will no longer be called upon to carry excessive stocks) to meet the varying needs of a multiplicity of individual specifications. Finally, users .will enjoy corresponding advantages and, moreover, will have definite knowledge in advance that they can obtain timber suited to their requirements without the delays and expense involved in the absence of a uniform trade practice. In particular, they will be assisted in matching boards produced by different mills.
