LABOUR FORCE
DISTRIBUTION IN NEW ZEALAND
The estimated distribution of the labour force in the Dominion on October 15, 1947 (this being «the latest computation available) appears in the annual report of the Department of Labour and Employment, for the year ended March 31, 1948. Primary industry accounted for 144,700 males and 13,390 females; second industry, 174,50*0 males and 43,500 females; transport and communication, 61,300 males and 6400 females; distribution and finance, 71,31010 and 36,900 females; public adminsitration and professional, 45,700 males and 42,500 females, and domestic and personal services, 15,600 males and 25,800 females.
The totals over, all industries are 533,100 males and 168,400 females, to which have to be added Armed Forces employing 8500 males and 500 females. The report show’s the only unemployed as 100 males; and adds: “The only sources of substantial iadditional w’orkers are the natural increase in the population of working age and net immigration of workers.”
