Causes of Insanity
’Alcohol accounted for only 17 cases in the total of principal assigned causes of insanity in New Zealand in 1947. This is stated in the annual report of the Mental Hygiene division of the Department of Health. The aggregate under the various principal causes for 1947 is 1739. Only two of the alcoholics were women. Constitutional causes accounted for 381, previous attacks for 277, congenital 211, mental stress 114, senility 280, arteriosclerosis 62, drug addiction (male) one, epilepsy 27, heredity 13, puerperal 16 (females), venereal disease 19.
