Ferms of War Memorials
“I think a war memorial should be a real memorial to those who fought and died in a great national crisis,” said Mr R. O. Gross, Auckland sculptor, in Wellington recently. Mr Gross designed the equestian war memorial on Lampton Quay, Wellington. “From all parts of the country one. hears of war memorials in the form of football grounds, tennis courts, and community centres,” he said. “In my opinion they do not serve the real purpose of a war memorial. Do boys running about kicking a football have any thought for those who died in the two wars of our generation? The same argument applied to a community centre. It is just something to benefit some people in everyday life. Surely that is not the purpose of a war memorial.” Mr Gross was recently elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors.
