HEALTH STAMPS

MEETING OF THE TE AWAMUTU COMMITTEE CAMPAIGN FOR 1948 A meeting of the Health Stamp Committee, Te Awamutu, to promote the sale of stamps in connection with the campaign for 1948 was held in the postmaster’s room on Thursday evening, 9th inst. Information has been received by the postmaster in reference to the reduced allocation of first day covers from 4000 in 1947 to 1250 as the result of the limited number of covers printed by the Federation of Health Camps. This year’s health stamps will be placed on sale on the Ist October and the issue comprises two denominations —ld postage plus id health (green frame and blue centre), and 2d postage plus Id health (red frame and brown centre). There are 120 stamps in a sheet and the sheet values are 15s and 30s respectively. The stamps take the shape of a horizontal rectangle. The design is the same for both values. In the foreground is a lad sun-bathing in a draped landscape window and watching other children at play outside. The centre-piece is a composite picture of an enclosed area of a health camp against a background of New Zealand scenery.

Health stamps are valid for postage on correspondence addressed to any part of the world to which postal service is available. In terms of Section 14 of the Finance Act No. 2, 1945, they may also be used for the stamping of receipts. For that purpose each denomination has the same •value as for postage purposes, i.e., Id or 2d.

The local quota for the current year, £375 is the same amount as for the previous year. It was decided that a preliminary canvass of the local business people and adjacent localities be made by members of the committee prior to opening the campaign and •it was anticipated that sales would be undertaken in the vestibule of the post office by members of the Red Cross Committee and Women’s Institute subsequent to the Ist proximo.

A canvass of the residential area will also be arranged after the opening of the campaign.
