COMMUNITY CENTRE

KAWHIA ORGANISATION SUCCESSFUL PROCEEDINGS A meeting of the interim committee of the Kawhia Community Centre was held last week to discuss the result of the recent social. From every point of view—the entertainment, the social and the financial—the social was regarded as a great success. ( The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of approximately £l4. This amount included a donation of £4 from Mrs Ward, who gave the money on behalf of her husband, Mr W. F. F. Ward, and Mr G. T. Gilbert, who had collected that amount at a “bonfire” gathering on Kawhia beach. The donors had intended to use the money for youth activity, but as they have now left the district, they handed it to the Centre. It was announced that five of the Kawhia associations had now joined the Centre, Mrs R. F. Lamb representing the Musical and Dramatic Society; Mrs A. Hills, the Women’s Division; Miss Nora Takiari the Basketball Association; and Mr D. Kirk, the Parents and Teachers’ Association. It was agreed that the Centre give assistance to the Parents and Teachers’ Association in running a function on May 27th. Musical Society The Musical Society held its weekly meeting on Tuesday of last week, when several new members were welcomed. Mrs Z. Rummings, of Auckland, who is the guest of her sister, Mrs E. Monteith, obliged with a number of songs, including “Danny Boy” and “I’ll Walk Beside You.” Miss J. Reeve, of Oparau, a new member, also sang “Mighty Like a Rose.” Health Group The lectures at the meetings of the Health Group are being continued, Dr R. F. Lamb being an interesting and popular lecturer. A reminder is given that it is not yet too late to join the Group as Dr Lamb intends to repeat a few lectures for the benefit of those who join late or who have missed some of them. Some of the members of the Group attended the basketball match and football on Saturday, ready to render First Aid had their services been required. Just Like Kawhia The Waitomo County Council finds itself much in the same box as the Kawhia County Council—graders broken down and no metal. At the April meeting of that Council, the engineer, Mr J. H. Tiffen, reported that all the t!;ree graders were now working, but not till after long stops due to breakdowns. The chairman, Mr W. A. Lee. said that if the Council could only be fortunate enough to secure delivery of a new grader on order their troubles as far as graders were concerned would be over. The engineer reported that delivery of metal had been held up on account of shortage of electricity supplied by the Wairere Power Board, but this had this week been overcome, thanks to the copious rainfall.
