OTOROHANGA COUNTY FIGURES SMALL AMOUNT PAID BY MAORIS s The following statement of - European Rates paid to the 31st March, 1948 was placed before the i Otorohanga County Council at Mon- . day’s meeting by the clerk (Mr M. P. , Goldsbro’:— Honikiwi Riding struck £2137 Is lOd of which £2067 19s 8d was paid or 96.7% collected, £167 7s lid was paid in arrears; Mangaorongo Riding, £6665 16s 9d was struck of which £6475 16s 4d or 97.1% was collected, arrears to the amount of £B6 15s 6d were paid; Te Rau-a-Moa Riding, £4238 Is lid was struck of which £3899 or 92% was collected, £274 14s 6d was paid in arrears; Waipa Riding, £3727 15s 7d struck, of which £3590 18s 7d, or 96.3% was collected, arrears paid amounted to £55 17s; Wharepapa Riding, £6122 7s 7d was struck of which £5953 2s sd, or 9f.2% was collected, arrears paid were £127 3s lid. The total was £22,891 of which £21,987 3s 3d, or 96% was collected. The arrears paid amounted to £7ll 18s lOd. MAORI RATES SMALL AMOUNTS COLLECTED The serious position of Counties having a substantial number of Maori ratepayers resident in their County is well-known to those who take an interest in such matters. While the Otorohanga County is not so badly off iB that respect as some other Counties, the following figures of Maori rates struck and collected, as supplied by the clerk (Mr Goldsbro) are illuminating. ► Details are:— Honikiwi Riding, rates struck £369 Ils 9d, out of which £29 6s 7d, or 8.1% was paid, arrears | paid amounted to £36 Is 8d; Mangaorongo Riding, £358 19s 9d, £73 8s Bd, 20.3%; Te Rau-a-Moa Riding, £479 18s lOd, £3B 12s 3d, 8.1%, £144 15s lid; Waipa Riding, £602 6s 7d, £37 5s 4d, 6.1%, £lll 6s 6d; Wharepapa Riding, £566 2s 2d, £134 0s 6d, 23.7%, £34 4s 3d. The total amounts were £2376 19s 2d, £312 13s 4d 13.1%. £340 7s lOd.
