MODERATE INCREASE
COST OF LIVING IN NEW ZEALAND The October issue of the United Nations statistical bulletin shows that the cost of living throughout the world has increased least in British Commonwealth countries, although the overall level reached new postwar peaks during August and September. In the British Commonwealth countries, the cost of living index, compared with 1937, has shown the following rises in recent months:—New Zealand, 26%; United Kingdom, and Southern Rhodesia, 33%; Australia. 36%; Canada, 38U ; South Africa, 46%; Newfoundland, 72%. Scandinavian countries and Switzerland are also reported as having relatively moderate increases in the cost of living.
