YOUNG MAORIS

LOOSE WAYS OF LIVING CONCEN EXPESSESD BY HON. E. T. TIRIKATENE An urgent appeal to older Maoris to support the efforts of welfare officers, was made by Hon. E. T. Th’ikatene, speaking at a meeting of Maoris at Waitara. ■ He said reports received of the misbehaviour of Maori girls and boys were a source of anxiety to the older people, and in many ways their unseemly behaviour was belittling the splendid work of the Maori battalion overseas. Welfare officers would be able to stop this if they received support, Liquor was all right in moderation, but too much often caused young people to drift into loose ways. “We must lose no time in arresting this drift if we desire to retain the respect in which the Maori race has always been held,” he said.
