MATERIALIST TRENDS
BETTER SPIRIT IN SERVICE URGED Materialist trends of the world—the trends that lead to wars—were emphatically condemned by Mr C. A. Smith (Gisborne), president x of the New Zealand Society of Accountants, in a recent address to members of the Wellington branch. “Some, people seem to think that spiritual things have nothing to do with the hard facts of business,” he remarked. “They feel it is not their concern and they can’t afford the time. They are too busy and have to get on with the job. “They forget that it is the man behind the machine that matters and the spirit behind the man. It is in fact the spirit in which every job is done that makes the job. The spirit in which a life is lived is the only really important thing in life. “All wars and chaos come from trying to live a material life and cutting out the spiritual side of life. The ’things of the spirit are not vague and impractical; they are the only things which give life meaning. Good will, kindness, service to others without thought of return are not just words. They are truth; they are scientific fact.”
