COMMUNITY CENTRE
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE NOTES PROGRESS Dr J. B. W. Roberton, at the meeting of- the Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening, gave a brief outline of the progress made in the establishment of a community centre in Te Awamutu. He referred to the aims of the provisional committee which was brought into being at a meeting of interested bodies some time ago. One of the first steps will be the appointment of a full-time director. A factor of considerable importance, however, is the problem of a home for the centre’s activities, and Mr W. J. Truscott said that this was also being felt bv the indoor basketball club, whose activities are now under way. Dr Roberton said that the Historical Society might be interested in fostering the cultural side of the centre’s programme. He thought also that co-oneration could be obtained between the Community Arts Service and the Library Committee in the establishment of a reference library which would be of value to the schools as well as to the community generally. The sneaker stated that the annointment of a director was however, to stimulate! the centre plans. Mr W. J. Craik, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, said it was most agreeable to members of the chamber that the project was under way. “The conveners should feel hannv at the success that has been attained to date,” he commented.
