THE CROQUET CLUB

ALTERATIONS TO PAVILION WANTED DEPUTATION TO BOROUGH COUNCIL A request for financial assistance towards much-needed renovations and alterations to the pavilion was placed before the Borough Council on Monday night by Mesdames Webber, Jourdain, and Blennerhasset on behalf of the Te Awamutu Croquet Club. Mrs Webber thanked the Council for the privilege of waiting on them, and placing before them the need for renovations to the club’s pavilion which was beginning to show signs of’ wear and badly needed attention. Such would cost money and they wondered if the Council would help to get it enlarged. The present pavilion was not sufficiently large to accommodate all the members at once. The club had to hold social functions to raise funds for the green-keeper’s wages. If the pavilion was enlarged they could hold all their social functions in it. Mrs Webber submitted a plan which was inspected by Mrs Jourdain said that when the verandah was erected it was with the intention to have it enlarged into a social room, but the times did not permit of that being done. In reply to a question Mrs Webbersaid the proposed alterations would cost approximately £l7O to £lBO. A builder had suggested pulling down the pavilion with a view to erecting a new one, but it was recognised that that was impossible. If wet, players had to go home, whereas if they had a larger building they could haye a friendly game of cards. The Mayor: And you want the Council to find all the money? Mrs Webber said they would not be so hard as all that; the Croquet Club was prepared to do its share. The Mayor said the Council were really interested to know how much money would be required. The attitude of the Building Controller also entered into it. Cr Clarke recalled the terms offered to the Swimming Club for proposed improvements to the baths, and he wondered if similar terms could not be offered the Croquet Club. A councillor at this stage mentioned the Tennis Club, and Mrs Webber said the membership of the Croquet Club was of necessity restricted and was not like the Tennis or Bowling Clubs. Cr Roberts asked the deputation what sum they were prepared to put in. Mrs Webber asked if it would be possible for the Council to give £1 for £l. The Mayor asked the deputation to get plans and specifications prepared for submission to the Building Controller and the ladies undertook to do so. The deputation after thanking the Mayor and Council for their courteous hearing retired.
