National Dancing Successes Joan Baker, of Te Awamutu, gained ! the following successes in the classes under 10 years of age at the dancing competitions held under the auspices of the Morrinsville Caledonian Society on Saturday: Highland Fling 2nd, Sean Triubhais 2nd, Irish Jig 3rd. Holiday Week-end Many residents of Te Awamutu took advantage of the long week-end to journey afield, and Ellerslie was popular with local .race-goers. Football enthusiasts were present in large numbers at the Auckland v. Waikato game at Hamilton on Monday. The next long break will be Labour week-end, 28th October. Men’s Society An address on his experiences in England was given by the Rev M. G. Sullivan to members of the Church i of England Men’s Society last night. Mr E. W. White presided. Mr Sullivan is to give a second instalment of ' his experiences at a later date. Sup- ] per was served by the stewards, Mr : R. Callis and Mr Brownlee. 1 Pictorial Envelopes A decision was made at a meeting of Te Aroha Chamber of Commerce 1 that production of pictorial envelopes < should be put in hand as soon as 1 canvassers had ascertained the quan- ; tity required by tradespeople in the < town. Te Awamutu could very well ! i follow suit in advertising our town r and district. < Posting Box Re-instated Thanks to the representations of the Postmaster, Mr Shearer, a post- ' ing box has been erected near the Regent Theatre. A box used to be there prior to the war when it be- ] came a casualty. Its re-introduction s will be welcomed by business people and. others resident in its vicinity. It ' will be cleared at 9.30 a.m. and i 7.30 p.m. . A Bad Practice The practice made by some parents ’ : of interviewing teachers about their i ‘ children during school hours finds j little f’.vour among teachers. Re- I • cently an infant teacher in Auckland I ! received six calls on one day. Had i 1 the parents waited until after school j ] hours all would have been well, but I J they came into the classroom while . teaching was in progress, and the children lost a major part of the day’s instruction. t d Legion of Frontiersmen Jb The anual Dominion conference of t the Legion of Frontiersmen was held i at New Plymouth during the week- p end, and was in all respects sucess- r ful and enjoyable. Captain G. Bridge, f Lieutenants Kerr, R. Callis, Quarter- f master Sergeant Robinson, and n Frontiersman Morriss, represented d Te Awamutu. The conference was on 1 similar lines to that held in Te Awa- p mutu, a re-union being held on the I Saturday night. The church parade p on the Sunday was held in the Pres- ; p byterian Church. The Te Awamutu 1 delegates speak in high terms of praise of the hospitality extended to 1 them. Dairy Factory Workers An indication that dairy factory < workers had cause to be dissatisfied c with their present low rates of pay, f was given by Mr A. Hayward, act- f ing chairman of directors of the New | Zealand Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., in the -f course of conciliation proceedings in i 7 Wellington. Mr Hayward is a repre- | < sentative of the employers in the dis- J pute concerning general drivers’ , claims for a new award, which is at present being heard before the Con- c ciliation Council. “The dairy factory ( worker receiving something like £5 1 6s a week is working alongside 1 drivers earning £7,” Mr Hayward 1 said, adding, “there is a lot of cause ; for discontent and unrest there.” j
