MEAT FOR BRITAIN

EMERGENCY EXPORT GRADE SCHEDULE PRICES ANNOUNCED In view of the drought conditions prevailing throughout the • major part of the North Island, resulting in the unavoidable slaughter of stock below the export standard set by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, and also in an endeavour to alleviate the grave meat shortage in the United Kingdom, it was suggested by the Meat Board that the United Kingdom Ministry of Food be asked whether porkers down to 40 lb per carcase, also third-grade lambs, wethers, and ewes, would be accepetable. Advice has now been received that Britain will take these classes of meat. All freezing companies have put in train the establishment of these emergency grades. In this they will have the assistance and co-operation of the Meat Board’s supervising graders, together with the inspection staff of the Department of Agriculture. Actually the new grades of meat to be exported will be composed of careases which had it not been for such bad pastoral conditions would have been of the quality normally shipped overseas? The action taken serves a two-fold purpose of dealing with emergencies in New Zealand and in Britain. Schedule prices to operate immediately for these emergency grades are as follow: North Island: Lamb. 88d lb; wethers, bid lb; ewes, 33d lb; porkers, 40-49 lb, 4id; porkers, 50-59 lb, 5Sd. The foregoing prices are related to the ruling schedules for higher grades of stock, and will rise from time to time in accordance with the increased wool growth
