Worst Accident Areas

The New Zealand Road Safety Council has prepared a table on the worst accident districts showing that in 1944 33 per cent of the fatal accidents and 45 per cent of all accidents occurred in one of the four metropolitan centres. In the same year 55 per cent of the fatalities and 73 per cent of all accidents happened in the built-up areas, and 45 per cent of the fatal and 27 per cent of all accidents happened on the open highway. Over 50 per cent of all pedestrian accidents in 1944 happened either in Auckland or Wellington. In the Auckland metropolitan area there is 11’per cent of the Dominion’s population and 12 per cent of the motor vehicles, but in 1944 this district accounted for more than 33 per cent of the pedestrians.
