BUILDING COSTS
“DESIRE TO DISCOURAGE INCREASES” REMARKS BY CHAIRMAN OF LAND SALES COMMITTEE The view that the desire was to discourage increases in building costs to returned servicemen and civilians was voiced by the chairman of the Land Sales Committee (Mr S. Lewis) in Tauranga. The committee was considering an application to sell a house property in an unnamed street near Hunter Street for £1775, fof which the Crown valuation was £1645. Mr G. B. Murray, who appeared in support of the application, had explained that the position was that tfye house had just been erected. The vendor was a former Air Force officer. Being a builder, he had built the house himself. All he was asking was to get the money he had put into it. There was some discussion about the question of the 10 per cent profit which had been allowed. The builder’s cost a foot for the erection of the building was computed at 265. The vendor explained in evidence that builders were charging 30s and 31s a foot for the construction of houses.
