TESTING OFFICER
RECOMMENDATION NOT AGREED TO VIEW OF COMMISSIONER OF TRANSPORT The Commissioner of Transport advised the Waipa County Council on Monday that he was unable to recommend the appointment of a Whatawhata business man as a driver’s license testing officer, as past experience showed that business persons, Isuch as garage proprietors, storekeepers, etc., were unable to give the matter the attention it deserved ,and the writer felt that that work should be the responsibility of traffic inspectors, who were trained and qualified as examiners. The writer made it clear that he did not doubt the Whatawhata person’s ability. Traffic Inspector Norris, of Te Awamutu, had been instructed to make periodical visits to Whatawhata for testing purposes. The clerk said that owing to lack of proper inspection several heavy traffic licenses had been lost to the County Council. It was decided to write to the Commissioner of Transport pointing out the unsatisfactory nature of the inspection, land that a number of heavy vehicles had been running without licenses.
In fairness to the traffic inspector at Te Awamutu it has to be stated that the northern end of the county where the vehicles in question operated is not in his area, and the alleged laxity occurred before his arrival in the district.
