TE AWAMUTU BRANCH The 17th. birthday of the Te Awamutu Women’s Institute was held in the Parish Hall on Friday when Mrs Angus Dresided over a large number of members and visitors. The meeting opened with “God Defend New Zealand” followed by the Institute song, after which Mrs Angus extended a welcome to all present. Mrs O’Brien then presented Mrs Angus with a shoulder spray in honour of her being elected President of the Waikato Federation. Flowers were also presented to Mrs Angus by members of the Te Kawa, Ohaupo, Kihikihi and Puahue Institutes and by the Patriotic Committee. Mrs Armstrong opened the concert programme with a pianoforte solo. Then followed two songs by Mesdames Blackler, Whitton and Adams “The oars are flashing lightly” and “Bless this House,” next a play-reading by the drama circle, “Wanted a Cook.” Margaret O’Brien two pianoforte solos; little Judith Wilson recitations; Eleanor Lowry songs and Kathleen Christian dances. The items by the little ones brought forth sustained applause. Just before tea all joined in community singing led by the Institute trio. Mrs Tolich presented the Birthday Cake and also lit the candles. Mrs Sugden, Federation secretary, blew them out, and Mrs Angus, President, Mrs O’Brien and Mrs Menary, vice-presidents, cut the cake. Competition winners were: Bowl of flowers, Mrs Menary 1, Mrs Irwin 2; shoulder spray, Mrs O’Brien 1, Mrs Tailby 2; best bloom, Mrs Watson 1, Mrs ’Williams and Mrs Menary tied 2; lucky number, Mrs Thomas, Te Kawa. Next month’s competitions are: Cup , jar of marmalade; miscellaneous, child’s knitted cardigan; and best bloom, with a demonstration on arranging a vase of flowers. This concluded a happy birthday, the meeting closing with the National Anthem.
