LOCAL AND GENERAL

Heavy Defeat the Waipa Rugby representative team visited Cambridge oh Saturday and suffered defeat to the tune of 28 to 6. Novel Meal A novelty in the way of refreshments was provided by a number of Maoris at the sports at Pirongia on Saturday. An appetising meal of pork and potatoes cooked in the Maori fashion. To those who had not seen a meal cooked in that way the spectacle was intriguing. A Generous Donation

This morning the Mayor (Mr L. G. Armstrong) received from an anonymous donor advice of a gift of a player piano to be realised on a basis of distributing the value equally between the Patriotic, Red Cross, and Plunket Society funds. The executive officers of the three organisations have been informed of this handsome gift, and discussion is in progress as to the best method of putting it to good account.

Carved Stern Post Intricate carving is a feature of the stern post, or taurapa, of a Maori canoe, which has come into the possession of the Canterbury Museum, states the Christchurch Star-Sun. It was probably carved not later than 1820, and may be regarded as one of the most perfect of its kind in existence. The stern post was found on the Otaki coast of Cook Strait by missionaries, and the carving, which was executed partly with stone tools and partly with spike-nail chisels, is in the style then popular on the southwest coast of the North Island. It is noted that Maoris were observed using nephrite chisels in the carving of canoe fittings as late as 1850.
